It is only since the sexual revolution of the 1960's that promiscuity among men and women was celebrated as virtuous that virginity and faithfulness in a monogamous committed relationship are viewed as counterproductive. Even then, most males were virgins until marriage. After several decades of this shaking off virginity by males and females are more people embracing virginity until a committed marriage and increasing numbers of sexless males in western society.
