This needs to be put out there. i noticed during the pandemic in britain they managed to home all the homeless and the city centre, for the first time id ever seen, was homeless free. So they can do it but they, for some F'ed up reason, choose not to as since all the lockdowns have ended, my city centre (Plymouth) is back to full of homeless again. Really sad to see.

  19. Here's a major point to consider, whenever we're talking about any relatively cheap product being shipped across the ocean - boats cannot travel empty. It's not safe, and not efficient, they have to be loaded. So if a ship brings a load of bauxite to Argentina, there needs to be something, ANYTHING, waiting at the harbour to fill that boat up again before it can leave. In fact, during WWII, when the US was sending thousands of liberty class container ships full of food and goods to support the British, those ships had to be loaded with something for the return trip. Many were simply loaded with large amounts of rocks and dirt, which was promptly dumped off the coast of the US on their return. So if a country is currently importing a lot more than they're exporting, in terms of filled shipping containers, they absolutely have to find something to export to establish balance.

My colleagues and I have been screaming about the dysfunction of our housing system for years and this video does and excellent job of covering the full scope of the problem. The fact that more, denser housing isn’t a global priority is wealth hoarding, plain and simple. I’m commenting because I believe that more people NEED to see this and understand how we are undermining our own future.

  25. When I was a preschooler, I was one of the last cases of Smallpox in North America. I caught the disease in Mexico. The disease left more than physical scars. When I entered school, I could not draw faces. Every human I saw during the more than a year I was hospitalized wore a mask. A year or two after I entered Kindergarten, I underwent painful plastic surgery to hide the scars. This left plastic ties in my skin. While I grew up these thin strands plastic began to fall out. When other teenagers where fighting zits, I fought plastic micro-sutures. I found one of last of these in the shower when I was in my late 60s. I am glad my offspring will not have to deal with this disease.

  33. Good video. But I have to disagree about blaming consumers for buying plastics, meat, driving cars, etc. You cant expect millions to subvert the economically feasible options presented to them. For example to provide for a family a father must drive to work, burning fuel. People want to live their lives and dont have time to scrutinize every little detail when this decision has a miniscule impact anyway. But yes, voting for the right people is certainly the most valuable thing people can do- government intervention may be the only solution

  40. For Americans, it's difficult to go carless (at the moment that is) because of the gross zoning and land use practices. You can't drive to the store without having to drive all the way there. You can't just walk down a block, pick up a few things that you need, and go back home. And that's why it's so hard to give up cars in the US then Europe; where a lot of older cities have mixed zoning and land use. To begin on limiting the use of cars (I think banning is extreme and takes away personal freedom of choice) Americans need to fix how the land is used and zoned. Only then will we be able to walk to the hardware store and nail a civil engineer to a cross.

You forgot the dumbing-down of the American education system--taking civics classes out of schools, as well as music classes; instituting "teaching to the (standardized) test" policies that ignore specialized knowledge, and book banning to remove any literature that is in any way controversial (Bradbury, Vonnegut, Salinger, Steinbeck etc.) If you want to get a well-rounded education in some parts of America, you have to do it largely on your own.
