  11. I'm just a drop of water in the ocean, but here's my story: I tried the old-fashioned work ethic at first. Started my first job in 2020 at $15 an hour, a seasonal position that I hoped would turn into a part time job while I went to school. I worked my ass off and made it known I was trying to stay. The big company decided that year, unlike past years, our store had to let go of all the seasonal staff when the holidays ended. I had shown ambition to stay and my managers got an exception made for me to stay on above what should have been our headcount. A year after I started, I was out of school and explained to our General Manager that I wanted benefits, like paid time off for an upcoming vacation, and wanted a full time job. Again, the managers talked with corporate and got an exception made so I could be over our head count for full time spots. I asked for a raise up to 16.50 and got it. I was proud of myself for being openly ambitious, and earning myself more by putting in the work. A year in, I was taking on leadership duties as a "shift lead" which is where I also do management work but am not compensated like a manager. I was admired by the staff in the store for knowing all the ins and outs of operating the place. And when it came time, the position above my current job title opened up at another one of our stores nearby. Here's where corporate greed turned me from a hard worker into a "quiet quitter" who was now in touch with reality. The new position was the same pay grade, for tons of extra work. I declined unless they were willing to pay me more than that position was capped out at. The managers there were sad to say that they could not make that exception, as corporate wouldn't allow it, despite how much they wanted me for the job and knew I'd be perfect for it. A few months later I found a different job with the same company that is far easier than what I had been doing, and they would pay me $2.50 more and hour to do it. I told my boss I was leaving even though I liked my job, because at the end of the day a man's gotta eat. I'm now at a position I care much less about, but I can afford a house with my girlfriend of 3 years and for 128 hours a week I am happy. I do the bare minimum every day at work and the company treats me way better because I sell their stuff instead of doing the shipping and receiving, which was a much more fulfilling and important job. But what matters is what the big man in the top chair thinks you're worth, and to him you're just a number. Stop caring since they don't. Get paid and go enjoy your time off the clock.
